Christmas Island lies in the Indian Ocean and is approximately 135 sq kms in size and is 2,650kms north west of Perth, Western Australia.

In 1958 jurisdiction was transferred from the British Colony of Singapore to Australia and this is remembered annually on the 1st Monday of October and known as Territory Day and was governed by the Christmas Island Act 1958 until this Act was amended by the Territories Law Reform Act 1992

This island is mainly of Oriental and Asian culture, as a follow through from Singapore influences with more than half the island being tropical forests and is home to Christmas Island National Park.

It is home to both thousands of seabirds, including endangered Abbotts Booby as well as land crabs and millions of red crabs who have the special task of both shaping and maintaining the health of the rainforest, and if you visit in December, you may be fortunate enough to watch the Red Crabs annual breeding migration back to the sea.

It has the following beaches:-

  • Dolly Beach - located on the lower east side of the island, and access is gained through walking from the carpark through coastal forest to reach the both the sandy beach and coral reef.There is a freshwater stream, and this Australian Beach is home to both crabs and turtles, with the turtles nesting all year round.   • Dorothy Beach - 2,599kms north north west of Perth on Christmas Island within Christmas Island National Park
  • Ethel Beach - 2,606kms north north west of Perth on Christmas Island and 5kms west north west is Drumsite
  • Gladys Beach - 2,604kms north north west of Perth on Christmas Island and 2kms east north east is Lily Beach
  • Greta Beach - 2,603kms north north west of Perth on Christmas Island within the Christmas Island National Park
  • Isabel Beach - 2,611kkms north north west of Perth on Christmas Island and within 1km is Flying Fish Cove
  • Lily Beach - 2,605kms north north west of Perth on Christmas Island and 4kms west north west is Drumsite
  • Margaret Beach - 2,609kms north north west of Perth on Christmas Island and 4kms east north east is Drumsite
  • Rhoda Beach - 2,609kms north north west of Perth on Christmas Island and 6kms west is West White Beach
  • West White Beach - 2,611kms north north west of Perth on Christmas Island and within 1km is West White Beach
  • Winifred Beach - 2,609kms north north west of Perth on Christmas Island and 6kms east south east is Christmas Island National Park

These beaches offer excellent diving, fishing, snorkelling and surfing, with the snorkelling best between April to October and surfing best between November to March and don’t forget your bathers for swimming in crystal clear waters.

Other activities that can be experienced include – bird watching and nature walks through the National Park.

The island offers a range of accommodation, shops and eateries to meet all budget types and access can be from arranged by flights ex Perth or ex Kular Lumpur.
