Lord Howe Island is an Island off the New South Wales Coast, in the southern Pacific Ocean, with flights from either Sydney or Brisbane, offering the best in beach holiday atmosphere – combining the best beaches that include a wide lagoon and coral reef, with rainforests, two mountains and National Park, and not to forget the breathtaking views.
It was named by Lieutenant Henry Lidgbird in 1788, who named it after British Admiral Richard Howe and it was first settled in 1834 with the arrival of three couples from New Zealand.
In 1878 the Island has its 1st Appointed Resident Administrator – Captain Armstrong
In 1879 1st school is opened and T.B. Wilson becomes School master
In 1890 Government House is built
In 1893 commencement of regular boat (steamship) service by Burns Philp and covers both Lord Howe Island and Norfolk Islands.
Tourism came to the island at the turn of the 20th century, with visitors arriving by boat, and in 1974 when the new airstrip was opened, visitors were now also able to fly in and out.
It was listed as World Heritage in 1982 due to its unique combination of fauna, flora and marine life and is 11kms long and 2kms wide with most of the area covered by Palm Trees.

There are a variety of things on offer – where you can get involved in treks, feed fish at Ned’s Beach, surf at Blinky’s Beach, climb a mountain, diving, cycle around the island, snorkel, scuba dive, swim, bird watching, kayaking, walk the reef.
The Island has a summer (Dec – Feb), temperature range of 19°c - 25°c and a winter (Jun – Aug), temperature range of 13°c - 18°c.
